No Corn Bread?

Posted in Travel at 4:15 PM by Jeff

One of the highlights of my trip to Texas was the glorious food. Even though we only ate two meals a day, I never went hungry. Two large meals is all you really need.

At a random Cajun restaurant we ate some of the best barbecue spare ribs I have ever eaten. Right before we went to see the Dallas Stars play, we ate dinner at the House of Blues. A whataburger graced my lips one late night. Of course, you can’t go to Texas without eating some good Mexican food.

My favorite meal had to be the last place we ate, a nice little place named Cracker Barrel. While I wanted to only eat at restaurants you couldn’t find outside of Texas, I had heard great things about the restaurant before. I was not disappointed…  The chicken fried chicken topped with gravy, honey biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, and fried apples were all very delicious. It was the cuisine highlight of my trip. My only problem was that they were out of corn bread.

Texans

Brandon and I meant some interesting people on our adventures in Texas. He already mentioned that we meet a political activist under the age of 30 at the JFK monument. Even though we nicknamed her “Crazy”, it was quite an interesting conversation we had with her. Ron Paul, Iraq, veterans, taxes, and other such things were all brought up.

Not to mention the conspiracy theorist we passed on our way to the famous “grassy knoll” near where Kennedy was assassinated. The official investigation of JFK’s assassination found that only three shots were fired. However, this guy was selling papers containing information about all NINE shots that were fired at JFK. He was explaining when we walked by that “shot seven came from over there…”

One of the bars we went to in Fort Worth had live music. It was a decent cover band with two guitarists and a bongo player. That’s where we met their only groupie who we lovingly nicknamed “Large and In-Charge”. No explanation needed other than she loved to tell other females (strangers) to dance with her. She also tried to force herself into our conversation multiple times from over 10 feet away. Note: that doesn’t work very well at a bar.

Of course, we met other people who weren’t crazy. We met two smokers (one with a lazy eye), yuppies, an Irish painter (who Brandon already knew), and an old lady that stumbled drunk into our table. Oh, and I’m pretty sure the two people next to us at the Dallas Stars game hate hockey. The moral of this story is that you can find interesting people pretty much everywhere.

The Texas Experience

Posted in Travel at 9:47 PM by Jeff

I am back safe and sound from my trip to Texas. My next few posts will go over what happened to me while in the Lone Star state.

While the trip was great, my souvenirs are minimal. I’ve been sporting my new belt buckles the last few days. I am probably carrying a few more pounds of weight after all the good Southern food. And of course, the pictures are a good keep sake.

For events, Brandon and I went to a Dallas Stars game, the old stock yards in Fort Worth, the House of Blues, Cabela’s, the JFK memorial, and the JFK 6th floor museum among other things. I’d like to say that I got to ride a bull at the stock yards, but Brandon wouldn’t let me.

Terse Trip To Texas

Posted in Travel at 10:27 AM by Jeff

Alliteration aside, I am traveling to the Lone Star State. I have never been to Texas before, but have always wanted to visit. This trip is partly due to the fact that the UP Women’s Soccer team is doing very well this year. They are ranked #2 in one of the national polls. Another reason for the trip is to visit my friend Brandon who lives in Dallas, Texas.

I will be sure to let you know about all the good barbecue and chicken fried steak when I return. Actually, I can already tell that a three day trip to Texas will not be long enough.

Future Vacations

Posted in Career, Travel at 12:57 PM by Jeff

Since we only get a set number of vacation days per year, it is important to use them wisely. I would rather not use one day here and one day there. Ideally, I could use a week or two at a time. While I am saving up my vacation days, it is fun to think about where I want to go next. This is what I have come up with for future vacations.

  1. Trip to Australia - I have wanted to visit Australia ever since I did a report on the country in fourth grade. For a while I was debating moving to Australia after graduation from college. But it looks like I will have to settle for a two week visit.
  2. Olympics - The next Olympic games that are anywhere near my part of the world are the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, BC. I do prefer the sports in the Summer Olympics, but seeing any Olympic event would be worthwhile.
  3. Cross Country Road Trip - I have not visited most of the Mid-west and East Coast states, but I would like to. What better way get there than by car? If anyone might be interested in joining me on one of the best road trips of all time, please let me know.

What future vacations are you planning? Asia? Europe?
