The Elusive Wild Turkey

Posted in Outdoors at 11:42 AM by Jeff

Last weekend was quite the adventure for me. A new friend of mine from church took me turkey hunting for the first time. I learned a lot and had a good time doing it.

The specific locations of all hunting grounds are secret, therefore I cannot tell you where we went hunting. If you want to try to find it yourself I will give you two hints. (1) It was in Oregon. (2) There were a lot of trees around. Better start looking…

What made the hunt so interesting was the difficulty of it. Wild turkeys are very smart (unlike farm raised turkeys) and have great vision, which make them very difficult to hunt. Good camouflage and remaining still are crucial to even getting to see a wild turkey.  An interesting side note is that Benjamin Franklin was said to have wanted the Turkey to be the US national bird instead of the Bald Eagle.

Some of the other members of my hunting party were able to bag turkeys during a previous hunt this season. However, no one was able to bag a turkey during this trip. We were able to get turkeys to come pretty close but they stopped just out of range. This could be due to a number of factors that I won’t make you read about here.

If any of you have the chance to try out the wonderful sport of turkey hunting, I would recommend it.
